SDME 2nd International Workshop

April 16, 2018,

  • The beginning of this journey, of the Solar Decathlon Middle East competition, had started back in Fall 2016, when our proposal had been accepted along with the other 20 teams from 15 different countries.
  • In early 2017, we had started the design process. We had held a competition amongst architecture students to choose the final design concept of the house. After the design stage we had also arranged meetings and signed agreement with our sponsors, in addition to that we had also worked on the design and construction drawings.
  • The projects were developed by collaborative teams, giving the students an opportunity to learn about technical issues, teamwork, communication skills, and a sustainable lifestyle.
  • Last month, after 2 years of dedication, commitment and hard work, we had finally launched the cornerstone, in our groundbreaking ceremony of the construction of AURAK’s Al Bayt Al Kamel: The perfect house.
  • It’s an honor, for team Al Bayt Al Kamel from AURAK, to be one of the participants in the Solar Decathlon competition, with the goal of designing and building a net zero energy house.
  • We sure have come a long way, and we still do have a lot of work ahead of us. We hope to see you all in November 2018 in Dubai, where AURAK’s Al Bayt Al Kamel will officially stand.
  • Al Bayt Al Kamel means ‘The Perfect House’. This project has been developed by students and faculty at the American University of Ras Al Khaimah over the past 2 years.
  • The concept and the design of the house is to be built as modules that will be constructed off site.

  • Al Bayt Al Kamel reinvents, just like in the traditional house, the courtyard is also the source of light and ventilation in the house, where all the living modules look at. As it is considered as the fourth module, it used as the entrance to the house and the access to the roof. The courtyard even provides enjoyable diffuse and green lighting, due to the PV panels and the green walls around it.
  • This goes to the usable roof, that can perform a range of domestic functions. It can be used to hang out washing, and in the evening for social gathering.
